Lately, we’ve been covering the topic of water damage and the restoration that often follows, because winter is usually the time that we get the most requests for water damage restoration. In part one, we covered the first three causes of water damage including frozen, old pipes and old water supply lines, as well as accidents and sewer back ups. Basement Humidity
Basements, crawl spaces, and other dark, damp places under our homes make excellent places for water to collect and our good ol’ friend mold to grow and destroy the structural integrity of our homes. There are a couple ways to avoid this issue. First, install a dehumidifier! A dehumidifier can be just the thing to keep the humidity level low, giving mold no reason to take up residence in your home. However, for greater amounts of humidity or water, you should consult a professional and perhaps invest in waterproofing your basement. Remember having water in your basement is not normal.
Pro Tip: Regularly check the areas of your home that are susceptible to moisture.
Flash Flooding
A flash flood can be another cause of water damage in basements. Though it isn’t likely that you will have water damage from a flash flood, it is an event that does occur and can cause massive amounts of damage. Preventing damage at the time of a flash flood is in many causes futile. However, if you live in flash flood prone areas, doing what you can to protect your home is a means to avoid utter devastation and purchasing flood insurance can help cover the costs of the damage.
Pro Tip: If you are a homeowner and haven’t already done so, ask a professional if you are in a flood plain, how likely you would incur damage, and how much flood insurance would be adequate to cover the damage.
